Definition Of Art - What Is Art The StarFields Way

Ever wondered, "What is art?" Ever wondered how "the establishment" defines what is art and what isn't art in the second decade of the twentyfirst century?

Well, when I woke up this morning, I asked myself those questions and did a web search to find out what the current definition of art might be. But I was in for a shock ...

In a nutshell, turns out that the movers and shakers of modern art have lost the plot and don't have a working definition of art any longer.

As Professor Christopher L. C. E. Witcombe quotes:

Arthur Danto, professor of philosophy at Columbia University and art critic of The Nation, believes that today "you can't say something's art or not art anymore. That's all finished." In his book, After the End of Art, Danto argues that after Andy Warhol exhibited simulacra of shipping cartons for Brillo boxes in 1964, anything could be art.

Warhol made it no longer possible to distinguish something that is art from something that is not.

Oooookaaay ...

So we can blame Andy Warhol for "killing the definition of art"?

But that's fine by me.

Because I HAVE a working definition of art, what art is, how it works, and even how to tell a real work of art from a fake art.

So it was with some delight and enjoyment on my part that I spent the day laying out MY definition of art, which is based on my work for the last 30 years, give or take, and the principles of which you will clearly recognise if you've ever even brushed up lightly against EMO and Project Sanctuary.

Now you, dear reader, might think, "Who cares about art? Art is stupid, only for the elite, for the disturbed of mind and those idiots who've got nothing better to do with their money than to pay a few millions for a shark in formaldehyde."

Please, take my word for it and THINK AGAIN.

Art is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT.

It may even be the missing link, that what you have searched for all your life, the very tool, method, way and path to your personal evolution and enlightenment.

Find out why I've come to this conclusion.

Set aside all you've heard about art, that's all in the past as far as I'm concerned, and now the time has come for a new definition of art, and for art to take its rightful place as the MASTER KEY to human evolution.

Here's the seminal StarFields essay:

What is Art?

Update: I have also written an essay entitled The Joy Of Art to explain my statement that I believe art to be a key to personal development which you might find interesting.

Arthur Danto, professor of philosophy at Columbia University and art critic of The Nation, believes that today "you can't say something's art or not art anymore. That's all finished." In his book, After the End of Art [see BIBLIOGRAPHY], Danto argues that after Andy Warhol exhibited simulacra of shipping cartons for Brillo boxes in 1964, anything could be art. Warhol made it no longer possible to distinguish something that is art from something that is not.
